ORahilly, an Irish scholar of the Celtic languages, proposed in a lecture that there were two Saint Patricks. This lecture, first delivered on the 20th of March, 1942, summarises the studies he undertook in the years 1934-35.

While studying the fifth and sixth century annals, he noticed the discrepancies surrounding the dating of Patrick’s mission. Although he notes that “the history of Christianity in the fifth century bristles with difficulties, many of them in chronological order”, he remains hopeful that “the most serious of our difficulties [regarding Saint Patrick] will resolve themselves quite readily once we get our chronology right.”Thus, he argues that the sixty-year apostolate of Saint Patrick is in fact divided between two missionaries: Palladius, also called Patrick, and his successor, Patrick, also called Patricius Secundus.
